Alright. Don't know If I had the same problem you guys are experiencing here so let me explain what issues I had...
I updated to kubuntu karmic beta yesterday using the internet. After installation completed successfully I did also have no sound at all. My mixer also is SigmaTel STAC9271D [my mainboard is a intel dp35dp]. So i tried to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-14-generic . Didn't work here either. Then it came to my mind! The menu.lst wasnt updated to start with the new 2.6.31.14 kernel. I was still using the old jaunty kernel after installation. So I altered the menu.lst to start the os with the new kernel and there we go... sound was back [only had to unmute the speaker slider].
