Complete re-install of Ubuntu + upgrade of Alsa to 1.0.20 + workaround
in alsa-base.conf (from LinuxQuestions.org):
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=toshiba position_fix=1
has resolved both white noise and system sounds - all now seem
operative.

Ok, have updated ALSA drivers to 1.0.20 and HDA Intel ALC268 Analogue (ALSA)
now works for music, web with workaround in alsa-base.conf (options
snd-hda-intel model=toshiba) BUT still no system sounds in Ubuntu and STILL get
the white noise between login and Ubuntu desktop appearing.

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !

Thanks for replying.
Have discovered that with ANY model specified for ALC268 in alsa-base.conf
(toshiba, 3stack, zepto etc.) the same thing happens: question.wav at X login
window; white noise until Ubuntu is up, then silence.
options snd-hda-intel model=auto gives silence all round.
