Thanks for replying. Have discovered that with ANY model specified for ALC268 in alsa-base.conf (toshiba, 3stack, zepto etc.) the same thing happens: question.wav at X login window; white noise until Ubuntu is up, then silence. options snd-hda-intel model=auto gives silence all round.
In 'sounds preferences' all options give silence on testing except 'HDA Intel ALC268 OSS' which allows Banshee to play .mp3 but no other sound (neither system nor web sounds). Help!?
