It was an unfortunate issue due to some change in Xfce 4.6, affecting
only the intrepid -> jaunty upgrade. It's rather old, I don't think it's
worth fixing that now (espcially since Xfce 4.8 is coming).

Hi,
I tried David Sauvage's above suggestion of selecting xfce session in
gdm, but unfortunately, it did not work for me. However, I can confirm
that the other workaround, that of replacing "xfce4" with "xfce" in the
.dmrc file in my Home folder, worked for me! If you want, you can see
my .dmrc

Hi,
i had the same problem after pugrading from intreprid to jaunty
The following modification in the file /usr/share/xsessions/xfce.desktop
solve the problem
replace :
Exec=startxfce4
with :
Exec=/usr/bin/startxfce4
Please note this bug concern xfce4-utils (4.6.0-1ubuntu1)
