I tried the solution above, by first putting in the terminal: sudo mousepad /usr/share/xsessions/xfce.desktop and then following the instructions of replacing Exec=startxfce4 with Exec=/usr/bin/startxfce4 I then closed the file and restarted the computer, but the same error came up and I had to go to an xterm session.
