I finally solved it.
Following the guide in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto , i
tried to "Manually Specify Module Parameters", inserting a new line in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig (as my card is an ALC662)

I have no "speaker" checkbox in the volume control on the switches tab,
only "headphone as line out" "IEC958" "Analog loopback" and "swap
center/LFE" (thats on 24-22, when i boot on 24-23 i have no sound device
at all so I cant even open the volume control panel)

My sound now works. All I did was boot into the 2.6.24-22 kernel,
opened the volume control, clicked on switches tab and checked
'speaker'.
I then restarted into the -23 kernel and sound works.
my suspicion is when I upgraded the -23 kernel, I also upgraded a
package that disabled that check bo
Well, recompiling and reinstalling last alsa drivers (1.0.17 or 1.0.18) doesn't
work, at least, in my computer with 2.6.24-23 kernel version.
Module is loaded (snd_hda_intel), alsamixer works, but no sound at all.

I followed all of the troubleshooting steps (other than downloading and
compiling the alsa source) outlined here:

Still no success.
One thing I notice is my lspci -v | less is missing a lines that say
'Kernel driver in use: ' and 'Kernel mod
Same for me.
After upgrading to 2.6.24-23 kernel, no sound.
Everyhting's fine with 2.6.24-22

Same here. I'm on T61p. Upgraded to the 2.6.24-23 kernel and sound no
longer works.
