I finally solved it. Following the guide in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto , i tried to "Manually Specify Module Parameters", inserting a new line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base: options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig (as my card is an ALC662) Rebooting, sound backed to life in 2.6.24-23 !! :-) Don't know why this parameter is needed now and not before. I hace another PC with ubuntu where i put this parameter long ago. Didn't remember until i read again ubuntu guide about configuring Hda Intel Hope this helps.
