I solved my problem!!! - don't know whether this will solve yours...
My /var partition was full. CUPS uses /var during its filtering process
(/var/spool??). Since it couldn't write to the directory, printing
failed!
It turns out that my backup utility filled up the partition without me
realisin

It is better to open a new bug report including the cups error_log information
for your issue since it is difficult to tell at this moment if you are
experiencing the same problem as reported by crjackson (which is missing the
cups error_log information) and mixing different issues
I have some similar issues. I have a Samsung CLP-300, but have
established by booting up into 8.04 that the printer works fine.
The reason I think it's similar, is that I seem to have had the problems after
an update.
To cut a long story short, I followed the suggestions about debugging printing
