You're right..it does fix the timeout issue upon inserting disks, but
every burn does indeed fail. Erasing a CD-RW does work however.

Hey, just an FYI, ASUS has released an updated firmware for the GSA-
T50L. You will need windows to update the firmware however. I haven't
tested it in wine.

Windows 7 RC (build 7100) for the last few months. Have not used an OS
other than Winblows, so this is definitely a firmware/hardware issue, or
a BIOS/Chipset problem. I have an ASUS x83vm laptop as well. (The one

I've run into this exact bug with the DVDRAM GSA-T50L on an Asus x83vm,
running 64bit jaunty.
I get Buffer I/O errors as well as the output from sudo hdparm -i

I just flashed my bios on this ASUS G50vt-x1 from version 205 to 213 as
I mentioned previously. I just ripped a CD and a 7gb DVD (ghostbusters),
set a bash loop to mount and unmount the cd over and over, and after all
that it worked just like normal.
however, then I went to burn a CD (arcanum play
for my system there is a BIOS update that fixes "Solve ODD can''t be
detected under DOS." (ODD means Optical Disc Drive). perhaps this is a
BIOS issue. I'm gunna try this and report back here.

Apparently CD Crives have Firmware. who knew?
this HP laptop offers a firmware update, but it's not my brand. should
stil work I'd imagine since it's the same model drive:

except that you'll need windows or wine to install it. (hopefully this

I should also mention that I'm not an Ubuntu user, I'm on Gentoo. this
is just the best place I've found for this particular hardware issue.
It's not distro-spcific. probably a kernel issue.

When the drive stops working it won't work again until the computer has
been shut down. Even restarting doesn't work. If i try to restart it
won't go past the first startup screen until it has been shut down.

Sorry for the second post, but its worth mentioning...
My first CD/DVD burner (internal SATA GSA-T50L) was working fine in
Windows XP, Vista, RC7
Was working relatively fine in Interpid with nautilus-cd-create (or
whatever that package is called)
Broke in Jaunty & the drive was physically replac
I am having the same issue in Jaunty (2.6.28-11 & 2.6.28-13).
Put a blank CD/DVD into the drive, it automatically gets mounted.
Try to burn an image with any program (Brasero, growisofs, k3b, etc)
Fails to burn the image, drive locks and can NOT be eject with any
software/hardware methods.

I had a cd burn fail in Windows and the drive locked up. this only
happened once, so I'm not sure it's the same deal but its probably just
a terrible drive.

I finally gave up on this though, I went to fry's electronics and bought
a usb dvd drive which works fine for both myself (ubuntu dual boot) and
my wife who has an old mac powerbook running os x.
I hope this gets fixed though for others who might unwitting
The drive works fine on Windows Vista Ultimate x64 here, both burning, reading,
and rebooting with some media inside.
On Arch it seemed to work fine on a little test I did a little while ago with
polling disabled. Only tested reading though (both of CDs and DVDs). And it

Found a few things, not sure it it's helpful or not.
First, hal fails after the drive locks spinning (won't stop or start correctly).
Second, seems to lock at POST.
Third, tried Archlinux's CDs (the two last versions), locks after a little
while using them too.

I've got the same problem, same model. this is either a driver problem
or a defect of the cd drive. I don't think I've had any problems like
this in windows, so I'm guessing it's a driver thing. which means this
is a KERNEL issue.
I also occasionally get repetitive errors in dmesg about a USB
...c

I put a CD in, and I was able to read the directory, and see one of the
files for a minute,
Here is what happened.
1. put a cd in the drive
2. hear the cd spin up.
3. cdrom appears on the gnome desktop
4. click on icon
5. see directory -- woohoo
6. navigate to dir, and click on file
7. drive spe
Do you want anything else from me, to get this off the dime?

ok, this may NOT be a problem with just writing.
I put a cd in expecting to play it.
RythmBox came up, and said there were 8 tracks on the CD.
BUT when I tried to play one of them, it made lots of noise for a little while
and then it just hung.
When I did a ls of /media/cdrom/ it showed nothing a
