I found this bug is still present on my jaunty 64bit, with nvidia 8200 card.
On book usplash works perfectly @ 1680x1050 (my lcd panel native resolution),
but on shutdown usplash is completely garbaged. Openaddict workaround works.

I found a workaround by changing the resolution in /etc/usplash.conf.
My native resolution of 1920x1200 was in the file by the installer, but
changing that to something smaller like 640x480 now displays the boot
splash image correctly. However, the issue remains that usplash can't
display a splash
