I found a workaround by changing the resolution in /etc/usplash.conf. My native resolution of 1920x1200 was in the file by the installer, but changing that to something smaller like 640x480 now displays the boot splash image correctly. However, the issue remains that usplash can't display a splash as large as 1920x1200.
