One of the things I do when I install kubuntu-desktop is go back and
install kde and all the kde styles/themes

What GTK engine are running for KDE? I always found that these can be
buggy, with the exception of QtCurve seems to work for me.
Try this:
Install QtCurve (sudo aptitude install gtk2-engines-qt

Eclipse emits the following error window on crash:
JVM terminated. Exit code=1
/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/bin/java
-Djava.library.path=/usr/lib/jni
-Dgnu.gcj.precompiled.db.path=/var/lib/gcj-4.2/classmap.db
-Dgnu.gcj.runtime.VMClassLoader.library_control=never
-Dosgi.locking=none
-jar /usr/lib/eclipse/
I updated Kubuntu 8.10 to KDE 4.1.3 as found in the repositories. This
did not produce any change in the error.
