I don't know how the nvidia driver works but it looks like nvidia-
settings is the best way to deal with its peculiarities.

Hi Alberto:
Thank you, it seems to work when I set the res to 1280 X 1024 but it
doesn't hold it when I reboot even though I hit the and buttons.
Its only good in the session I'm in when I set the res.

1) the sudo command did not work - see screenshot attached
2) I have the nvidia drivers uninstalled now so the screen looks ok
3) should I re-install the nvidia drivers then
try the ammended command again ?
4) by log file did you mean the .conf file I just sent to you?

This line from the log looks very suspicious:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1600 x 1280
Type:
sudo nvidia-settings
and try to set the correct resolution from there. Then save your
settings and restart the Xserver.
Let me know how it goes.

Sorry. I forgot to mention in the previous msg. that even if I were
to center the image on the monitor that some of the icons on the left are
chopped off and are not totally displayed.

I'll try to center it, but its dual boot and I've had other dual boot windows
and linux systems in the past and never had to adjust the monitor each time I
boot
to windows or linux. Even if I can center it, its still not displaying to the
full

Sorry, somehow the word "try" was missing from my previous sentence (it
should have been "Did you try to change" instead of "Did you to
change").
The fact that it's ok in Xp doesn't mean that it should be the same in
Xubuntu. Please center the monitor manually.
