Hi,
Finally I understood where that crackling comes from.
That's true the PCM volume being zero it crackles.
It just happened too many times with Opensuse and just now for somehow
unknown reason with Ubuntu. 9.04.
Would'nt it be possible to just make it silent when zero volume and
solve the fac

Seems like you got the wrong person, my name is Shea Kang and I don't know
who might David be. I do remember having sound issues early on, but a string
of updates later I no longer face this problem. You might need to follow up
with David though.
Thanks!

Hi David,
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
If it remains an issue, co
Had the exact same problem.
"During music playback, I would get nothing but crackling."
I confirm that raising the PCM level solves the problem.
Will there be a permanent fix?

If you are getting crackling sound when sound is expected could you
check your Alsa Mixer PCM channel. We have found that this sometimes
gets reset to 0 volume, and when it is there you get crackles instead of
the expected silence. Changing this to a sensible volume say 80% may

Using an Advent 4211 Netbook (MSI Wind clone) I installed Ubuntu 8.04.1
and then upgraded to Intrepid Alpha 6. Since then I have been following
the updates most days. For the last 36 hours (after seeing a Pulse
update go past, I think) I only get a crackling sound whenever any sound
is played.

I take it back... it's still not working. It seems to work sometimes but
mostly not. I tried adding options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad to
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, as suggested by

fix it. (Also, on boot, it appears to make t

I got this to work by changing all playback to AD198x analog, and all
recording to USB audio (as I have a webcam), in
System->preferences->sound->devices tab. I also needed to alter my Skype
settings to get it to work there. On the command line, "aplay test.wav"
gives me the same problem as before,
