If you are getting crackling sound when sound is expected could you check your Alsa Mixer PCM channel. We have found that this sometimes gets reset to 0 volume, and when it is there you get crackles instead of the expected silence. Changing this to a sensible volume say 80% may sort out your symptoms. The crackling at zero volume should be sorted out with the very latest updates from -proposed on intrepid but the mixer still needs to be moved from 0. Could you check and report back here.
