Administration -> Software Sources. On the updates tab, make sure that
Proposed Updates is checked. You can then mark libgksu for upgrade in
Synaptic.

Launching Add/Remove Applications (gnome-app-install) doesn't require
you to be root straight away. It only asks for your password when you
commit a change, when it calls Synaptic. I'm not sure if you actually
tried installing/removing an application with gnome-app-install. If you
did, and it worke
