Results of running gksu id: uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root)
Seems to work fine.

As far as installing libgksu, I don't follow a lot of the Linux news and
other than being able to muck around in my system I'm not a Linux heavy.
I do have a very heavy Windows background but I've been away from
programming for about 6 years now and getting quite rusty. I will
gladly install it if you would kindly point me in the right direction.
Once I'm on the right path I can easily take it from there.

It seems as if the problem only pops up when I click on the panel icon
when it reports that updates are available. If I ignore the icon and
start the update-manager directly the problem never occurs. I've got a
pretty standard system with no tweaks or development loads. I have
installed all available updates.

If there is anything else I can do to help please let me know.

PS - Despite being a prior Windows programmer (mostly database and VB6
applications) I prefer to boot to Linux. Perhaps one of these days I
will find the time to learn how to program in this environment.

Thanks!
