Hey,
Initially I thought it was because of the graphics driver problem. But
Now it is happening all the time. Do you have any log entries made when
you try and shutdown the computer ?
I switched to Console and did a tail -f /var/log/*, returned to gnome
and selected restart. I only encountered on
Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 x86-64. I get the same problem, but it
happens all the time without requiring a graphics driver error to occur
(I haven't seen any graphics driver errors). I select System ->
Shutdown. A dialogue box appears, and then I select Shutdown. The system
goes back to the
Restart command from the login screen works fine.

This is happening any time I start my computer. No matter what. Whenever
I try and shutdown the computer from the menu, it just restarts X.
