Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 x86-64. I get the same problem, but it happens all the time without requiring a graphics driver error to occur (I haven't seen any graphics driver errors). I select System -> Shutdown. A dialogue box appears, and then I select Shutdown. The system goes back to the log-in screen instead of shutting down.
