the workaround given by Anmar worked perfectly, at least in my case where
the shit key was not working. Have you tried it ? Maybe by setting the
default preferences in the CompizConfig you will make all your keys work.

This continue to happen in Intrepid (8.10). Here is the work around in a
more descriptive way:
1. Go the System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager. If you don't
have CompizConfig Settings Manager installed, you do so by opening a terminal
and typing "sudo apt-get install

problem.
So we have a nice workaround, and now I can use compiz without playing brain
trainning meanwhile.

I had exactly the same problem, but I managed to fix it by:
Preferences->Advanced Desktop Effects Settings. click Preferences in the
left pane, then click on 'Reset to defaults'. After that shift works
instantly, and changing settings for various plugins works fine too.
