I had the same problem - CUPS admin interface hangs in Modify Printer -
and after debugging and stracing I came across this bug report. The fix
seems to be to use a different browser, ie Chrome / Opera

It might be a malfunction related to some obscure aspects of firefox. I
connected with "seamonkey" and could successfully administer the
printer(s). Don't have any idea about the intrinsic nature of the bug.

Still not solved in 8.04 as it seems. I tried to access the CUPS web
front end via Ubuntu 9.04 (Firefox 3.0.11) and OS X 10.5.7 (Safari 4.01
and Firefox 3.0.11), but failed by entering the credentials, too. The
user is in the lpadmin group, remote administration is allowed. Push ...
;-)

I had the same problem today.
Was bound to upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 server because of no more repositories
access.
The Cups server, when I try to administer from remote, asks user/password
then hangs forever.
Lost a tremendous amount of time trying different configurations,
reading manuals et
stumbled over this today ;/
please fix this in hardy LTS asap.

This seems to be a bug in CUPS. A patch is available at
http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2892
Any chance to get this backported for hardy? Would be great, as hardy is LTS
and widely used on servers with XP clients.

I can verify that the exact same thing happen to me on 8.04.
Using the "Printer configuration" remotely from an Ubuntu box works though.
