I have the same problem. Some more details:
It occurs not only in totem, but also in vlc and probably other players
as well.
When I tell vlc to use X11 video output instead of Default or XVideo,
the colors are fine (but I don't think I'm getting accelerated video
rendering.)

Dan (and anyone else who might encounter this bug),
This issue is caused by Nvidia's proprietary driver, if you switch the
hue settings in Totem (or gstreamer) from minimum to maximum you'll get
normal playback again. Unfortuantely, this doesn't change the issue
with usplash.

No difference here.
Works on my Laptop tho, has hardy too and geforce driver. Very weird.

I have noticed that this Problem does not occur from start but happens after
some time. I was not able to reproduce it at any given time.
I run totem-xine, but it also appears with mplayer.
When i run mplayer with -vo x11 it works fine tho, seems it only appears with
-vo xv (with is standard i th
I have also run into this problem in Hardy with proprietary Nvidia
drivers (Quadro 570 in my case). Uninstalling Totem stopped it from
happening to video, but the effect also shows up on usplash when I shut
down (at boot up usplash is unaffected).
