Its a problem with gnome as far as I can tell and as I was using Mint Linux
3.0 at the time (the Gnome based version) I haven't reproduced this result
so far with the later version of Mint Linux 4.0 (KDE based) based upon
Ubuntu 7.10. or with Kubuntu.
(Mint Linux is apparently an Irish invention -
KDE is not stabler, not sure how you triggered your bug and what Mint
Linux is, there is no other user who reported a similar issue

Thanks Sebastien
I was able to add the Gnome "start-up" buttons (in my case Applications,
Raccourcis, Sytème) but somehow its not as nice as Mint Linux look. In fact
I've had this happen a couple of times with Ubuntu in the past and there
still doesn't seem to be a bug fix that I've heard of.

Thanks for your comments. This does not appear to be a bug report as
such. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make
more sense to raise your question in the support tracker.
