Thanks Sebastien I was able to add the Gnome "start-up" buttons (in my case Applications, Raccourcis, Sytème) but somehow its not as nice as Mint Linux look. In fact I've had this happen a couple of times with Ubuntu in the past and there still doesn't seem to be a bug fix that I've heard of.
