In 14.04 this problem still persists exactly as described here. I have
tested it on multiple machines (with Ubuntu and also with Mint 17.1).
Changing the parallel mode (ECP/EPP etc.) does not make a difference.
For those looking for a quick, rough solution: enabling force_nibble in

Same problem here. I can preview the image with xsane, configure
settings and start the scan using an HP scanjet 7400c. Then scanning
hangs and spits out an "error during device I/O" message.
Xsane scanning (which, by the way, makes me go IN-sane...), has worked
intermittently with this scanner fo

Same configuration files as above (Matt Wilkie).
- I/O errors from time to time, hope the scanner is well.
- No successfull color scan at this (that ?) time. (fr : pour le moment ...)

I ran into exactly the same problem with the Canon Scanner FB630P in
Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and xsane 0.996. Appreciate if somebody can
come up with a fix.
As I need to scan for a number of reasons, does anyone know of a scanner
that works properly with Ubuntu?

Thanks for your well mannered and productive comment.
What Ubuntu release are you using? Could you try testing with Jaunty
which contains xsane 0.996-1ubuntu2?

It usually allows me to take a preview scan in greyscale. If I up the

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue
for you? Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release (Hardy Heron)?
Thanks in advance.

changed BIOS to parallel port setting to ECP. Now starting xsane as user
reports no devices available. Starting xsane as root takes about twice
as long to start, says there are no devices available, and then about
half a second later the scanner gives it's little wake up dance.

I've managed to replicate the working preview thing:
1) enable forcenibble
2) preview in grey-scale mode. **works**
3) scan **works**
and the "first few rows" thing:
1) enable forcenibble
2) preview in colour, **stalls after 2 seconds**
