Same problem here. I can preview the image with xsane, configure settings and start the scan using an HP scanjet 7400c. Then scanning hangs and spits out an "error during device I/O" message.
Xsane scanning (which, by the way, makes me go IN-sane...), has worked intermittently with this scanner for the past few years. For a while I'll have the ability to scan, updates come down, then no scanning for a while. Currently I'm running ubuntu 9.10 on one machine, and kubuntu 9.10 on another.
