In 14.04 this problem still persists exactly as described here. I have
tested it on multiple machines (with Ubuntu and also with Mint 17.1).
Changing the parallel mode (ECP/EPP etc.) does not make a difference.

For those looking for a quick, rough solution: enabling force_nibble in
/etc/sane.d/canon_pp.conf makes it possible to scan grayscale at 75 and
300 dpi. Colour scans and grayscale at 150 dpi still fail with the same
symptoms: the scanner halts after some brief initial motion.
