I tested it with current Xorg from hardy.
The problem persists.
After some debugging and binary search in xorg.conf I found out that the bug
only
occurs at a colour depth of 16-bit.
The problem can be worked around by switching DefaultDepth in the Screen
Section from 16 to 24.

Thanks for reporting. It would help if you could test this with the
recent Hardy alpha 1 CD, and perhaps alpha 2 later, which should be more
settled with up-to-date xorg and drivers.

Could you please recheck it with Gutsy Live CD? I guess the problem comes from
your xorg.conf. If it works with Live CD please generate a new one with "sudo
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg".
If it doesn't work please attach the files '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' and
'/etc/X11/xorg.conf' from the Live CD.

mmh...what about making a fresh install of gutsy on a different drive to
see if it works then. If not I guess some parts of your hardware are not
well supported in gutsy.

Ok, my problem is that it does not work for me.
Do you have any idea which package caused this or which packages were updated
so this is fixed for you now?
I have all packages updated to gutsy current and still see this.
Greetings from Karlsruhe, btw. :-)

This bug also affects other video players.
For mplayer -vo x11 the option "-vo x11" helps.
The problem is that some gui players like miro do not allow to set an option
like this.

The described workaround is only just that, a workaround.
One can not expect beginners to find the solution.
Since this did function some weeks ago it is a regression.

Here comes the solution:

I have some additional info for this bug. Totem has a feature to capture

is not just black as I expected it to be, the screenshot shows the part

That seems especially weird to me because totem stays bl
Im using Gutsy. Actually I found out its not only that video files

lPlease make sure you have the correct codecs installed.
What version of ubuntu and what version of players are you trying to use? Is
there a website that you are trying to play, or what type of video, is this
amd64 386?
