When I search for vmware using Synaptic I see the list of categories
restricted to the "System" category, but no entries.

Thanks Yan. I realised player couldn't be upgraded to server, I was
trying to say that those with player installed from pre-Gutsy will
expect it to be upgraded one-day to a Gutsy player. If you're saying
that server is a super-set of player then that's fine and maybe we don't
need player on Guts

are two different products, just like Mercedes-Benz 300 compared with

Hey all, I see the vmware-server package is already in the partner repo,
try it. And close this bug if it's OK to you. It's not in the
"Add/Remove..." program, you'll have to use Synaptic to install it.

Dare I suggest that users itching to get this use Automatix? The
supposed reports of automatix's demise after Gutsy were obviously
premature - VMware player and server, among other things, are in the

to 7.10. We don't want to move away from repo-supplied packages since

For your information, you can install vmware from the rpm package
downlodable on the officiel web site.
sudo /tmp/vmware-server-distrib/bin/vmware-uninstall.pl
sudo apt-get install alien
download the rpm (sudo /tmp/vmware-server-distrib/bin/vmware-
uninstall.pl)
make the deb package : sudo alien
any update on vmware-server? will we see it packaged in the partner
repository? right now i'm holding my desktop back, waiting for vmware-
server to catch up with gutsy. i could go about to download and install
it manually, but since i'm not really in a rush, i can wait for a
package -- is one plan
Enable the partner repository. Opera is available through apt once
again.

But if it is that simple to do, and there's "rules" files from previous
versions. Shouldn't a new package be out in less than 5 minutes if
someone decided to build one?
I'm sure the above solution works like a charm, but I'd prefer a
solution that's handeled by the package manager.

Workaround:
1. Back up your license file found in: /etc/vmware/license.vs.1.0-00 or at
least save the serial contained in that fi
The additional problem with this is that once you have upgraded to the
kernel in gutsy you can no longer run vmware-server with the vmware-
server-kernel-modules package since there isn't one for the gutsy stream
kernels. Not only that, but I've been told by people in #ubuntu-kernel
