The additional problem with this is that once you have upgraded to the kernel in gutsy you can no longer run vmware-server with the vmware- server-kernel-modules package since there isn't one for the gutsy stream kernels. Not only that, but I've been told by people in #ubuntu-kernel there is no planned support for those packages either. This is unfortunate as the newest vmware-server (1.0.4) installs and builds kernel modules without a hitch on i386 (no patches needed) and so there really should be no roadblock for this.
