Booting into the install kernel (and into the liveCD for 13.04), the
drive works.

Have the same problem, though it will absolutely not allow any use of
the drive and will sometimes not even successfully be listed as a
device. Using Ubuntu 13.04 on both a desktop (Gateway DX) and a netbook
(Acer Aspire One), and the same thing happens to both when I plug in the

Yes, Ubuntu 13.04 does have this problem, my Ubuntu 13.04 machine wont
let me mount (not by gui or when I manually try to mount it via mount
command as root ) But the HDD works fine when connected to USB on Ubuntu
10.10 or Debian 7 so I am sure its not a HDD fault.

Dhinakar is right. Ubuntu 13.04 refuses to mount USB external HDD with
NTFS partition. It was working flawlessly on 12.04 LTS for me. The sad
thing is that I have important backup documents on there and I would
like to access them while on Ubuntu. Hope to hear from Canonical about
the fix ASAP.
Same here too... NTFS partitions in my internal harddisk where windows 7
is installed are working fine in ubuntu 13.04 and I had no issue with it
ever... The problem is only with USB external hardisk NTFS partition...

Bugs,
Same problem here, tried on two fresh 13.04 installs.
External HDD contains NTFS and Fat32 partition, both cant be mounted.
After chkdsk under Windows, FAT32 partition shows up in Nautilus but
says bad superblock when trying to mount. NTFS doesn't show up, gparted
reports input output error.
Both
Forgot to mention that the internal NTFS partition containing Win7 can
be mounted fine, might to be the partition then...

Clean 13.04 install on Dell Latitude E6400.
No problem in 12.10 (booted from USB stick).
No errors in WinXP.
NTFS USB HDD does not mount in 13.04.
No tests/checks done, dont want to corrupt content.
Guess I'm moving to 12.04LTS.
I need a stable system...

I can mount the NTFS external drive, but in my case computer hangs

I moved all my data to main hard disk and formatted the NTFS USB
external HDD using slow formating (not quick format). I wasted 10 hrs
doing that. But even that doesn't help. It works fine in Windows 7 not
in Ubuntu 13.04. Chkdsk shows no problem. As I quoted, everything was
