Do you encourage people to install envy via apt? If so perhaps you can push
updates to people that pop up a small notification area message asking them to
click for information if an upgrade is going to occur and then offer them an
uninstall option? Perhaps update-manager could spot env

I see your point, however that step won't solve the problem if a user used the
Nvidia installer (the one from Nvidia's website) to install the driver.

I did an upgrade on one box, and forgot about my nvidia driver, which was
isntalled using the selfcontained package downloaded from nvidia. And this
ofcause failed as well. So the only solution is to uninstall the nvidia driver
before upgrading.

Sitsofe:
1) uninstalling Envy won't solve the problem. Envy is just a PyGTK application
which compiles the driver. On the contrary, uninstalling the nvidia-glx
packages will solve the problem.
Envy does not use the distinction between nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new.
2) Restricted Drivers Manager
Alberto:
Couldn't people uninstall envy before the upgrade then add it back afterwards?
Also would fewer people need envy now that restricted-manager has been added?

oh, and of course removing/blocking Envy wouldn't solve the problem
since the nvidia packages are the ones which cause that mess.

I'm Envy's developer. I think there might be 2 problems:
1) Envy 0.9.1 (which doesn't support Feisty) was installed (Envy 0.9.2
supports Feisty)
2) (more likely) Envy uses compilation scripts from Debian Experimental
(of course I had to tweak them a bit) and builds packages which are
compatible
Adding an envy product to this bug too so the envy author can chime in
on this.

I'm not sure exactly how Envy operates, but it basically downloads the
latest nVidia binaries and installs them for you, and now it would seem
it makes a .deb package.

You rec
This is very likely a bug in envy then. We could add some code to the

experience with envy.

After using Envy to remove the binary nVidia driver, the upgrade worked

I can confirm this very same bug. I used Envy to install the binary
nVidia driver. I'm going to run Envy and uninstall the driver, then try
upgrading Ubuntu again. I'll post the result here.
