I see your point, however that step won't solve the problem if a user used the 
Nvidia installer (the one from Nvidia's website) to install the driver.

If you want to add an error dialog, at least please let it show up only
if envy < 0.9.2 (since 0.9.2 supports Feisty while older versions
don't).

another thing to check would be:
if nvidia-glx > 8776 then purge nvidia-glx and install the new nvidia-glx (same 
thing should apply to nvidia-glx-dev and nvidia-kernel-source) [nothing has to 
be done for the legacy driver since Envy used Ubuntu's 
nvidia-legacy-kernel-source]
if xorg-driver-fglrx > whatever the version in Edgy's repositories was then do 
the same thing.

Please, let me know your decision.
