UPDATE: instead of an "apt-get install vlc" from the universe repo, i tried to compile from source with "apt-get -b source vlc". Now the volume control is available and effective, but the applet i estetically imperfect. I run kubuntu in a amd sempron with a custom 2.6.19 kernel. -- VLC volume
