DMix is enabled by default on hardware without mixing support. So this
may be a driver issue. Anyway, I really suggest you to use JackD (or
JackDMP) with the 'realtime' option enabled. Don't forget to increase
the limits in /etc/security/limits.conf. ;)

Well, I had a peek at the newest source code and the usb_autosuspend
functionality seems to have changed and improved quite a bit (most
important point seems to be the addition of an initial delay). So I
guess it is best to disable or backport usb_autosuspend officially.

Sure, I understand this. My scanner doesn't work, too :).
But I think the ones to blame are the companies which ignore the Linux
market and so some of their customers. Often writing a primitive driver
is just a matter of 1 or 2 days. Ok, USB host drivers (in this case) are
a lot more complicated.
Please, CALM DOWN. If this were as easy to fix, it would have been done
by the kernel team. Btw, it's just not true that only Ubuntu has this
problem.
The problem has been fixed for the next version of the linux kernel, but
you have to unterstand that they cannot just send out a new kernel

That's a nasty bug in Ghostscript then (memory leak, infinite loop?).
Ghostscript should always behave independent of malformed Postscript
