I can confirm that, as Gyula Pataki wrote, recent upgrades plus Catalyst 11.8 fixes this. Note that the compiz-testing PPA is not needed, at least in my case I got it working without this PPA (which was empty at the moment). Well, removing vesa= option didn't change anything, I saw no difference. However, adding radeon.modeset=0 gave a good result. My system booted to console login, but after switching to tty7 I saw well-working X with hardware acceleration, and I was able to run compiz, and any other 3d-applications
