Sorry for the very late reply. This issue seems to have affected an
older version of frog where a dependency was missing, it has been fixed
in subsequent package releases of frog (at least since 0.13.7-1), so I
think we can consider the issue closed?

Short follow up: It is not the unity plugin in compiz that causes this,
but something else loaded for the default 'Ubuntu' session.

Public bug reported:
It seems the Wallpapers plugin, which I use to have different wallpapers
for different workspaces, no longer works with Unity. It works fine if
Unity is disabled. Note that apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop
is disabled in gconf2, so Nautilus isn't managing the wallpaper

I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 and it seems the Expo plugin no longer
plays nicely when Unity is not enabled. I have Expo on BottomLeft edge,
it appears as expected, but when I select a workspace, the workspace
does not restore properly, it seems to be oddly positioned at an o
I have this very same problem on the final release of 10.04 Lucid,
Macbook Pro 5,3. And I can also confirm that on karmic it generally
worked, but sometimes randomly failed, restarting indeed seemed to fix
it. But now things appear completely broken.

Ah yes, how silly of me, I found no devkit-power-daemon in $PATH so I
thought this was it. Attached is the full backtrace.

Is it using the gspca_zc3xx driver? From what I understand this is a
v4l2 driver and some apps use the older v4l1 instead. I got it to work
by preloading a wrapper library for v4l1 compatibility as follows (make
sure libv4l-0 is installed):

I think I have found a fix for the issue of the garbage at the
right/bottom when forcing compiz to start despite the failed texture
size. By setting a virtual size I manage to use my preferred resolution
(1280x800), without needing to revert to 16bpp:
Put this in your "Screen" section in /etc/X11/
I have the exact same issue as well on a HP compaq nx7010 with ATI
Radeon 9200. Whilst Feisty+Beryl used to work fine I am now forced to
switch to 16bpp instead of 24bpp on gutsy, if I don't I get:
Comparing resolution (1280x800) to maximum 3D texture size (1024):

If I set SKIP_CHECKS=yes
ok, I see there are lots of other reports on that.. switching to 16bpp
instead of 24bpp works for me, although it used to work on feisty with
24bpp, but I have bad eyes anyhow so I probably won't notice :)
I'll consider this one solved..

Right, thanks! Removing that at least fixes the nasty freeze.
And now I can run compiz in 1024x768 (which is a sucky resolution for a
widescreen laptop). Unfortunately it doesn't enable me yet to run compiz
in my current resolution (1280x800, which did work on feisty), as I get
