I found a workaround... just created a new connection with my static IP. It
takes it about 30 seconds to figure out which connection to use, but then it
connects, and works fine thereafter. Its a minor annoyance to me, but to an
inexperienced user, it would be a severe headache.

Yup, i was able to do this, but it is very flaky. On bootup, it takes it a
while to figure out to use the manually configured one, but eventually uses
it.

to tell it to use either nVidia driver (I tried both drivers). It tries,
but then pops up a dialog with no text! It doesn't explain what went
wrong, but clearly the driver was not enabled.

I'm experiencing this same (or very closely related) bug. I use static
IPs on my home network. When I right click on the network icon, add my
IP, gateway, etc values (as I did with 8.04) the settings don't
stick. I have the latest 8.10 updates as of Oct 25 2008; I'm running the
32-bit version.
