In 9.10 this has worked from time to time, and I'm pretty convinced it
varies between the kernel versions.
In 10.04 LTS (Release Candidate) updates as of today, it does not work
again.

I'm not the person to solve this problem, but I have the exact same problem
myself.
That is: The accesspoint I have at home is shown. The one at work, is not. And
I cannot connect to the one at work, even though I do the setup manually,
explicit tell Ubuntu the SSID it should connect to.
Forgot to mention.. This is Karmic amd64-version.
And the report is telling that "bcmwl-kernel-source" is not installed, but that
is because I tried to un-install it to see if I could get it working with
anything else... :-)

I have an HP Pavilion TX2690 (it's in the tx2000-series). And have just

I can confirm this. I had this exact same problem a month back or so - but
fixed it using a _ugly_ (imho) hack.
Now I reinstalled another computer, and the same problem occurs.
