I'm having the same problem, or at least symptoms, with ext4 filesystems
and Ubuntu 14.04. The Samba server I'm trying to connect to is still
running 13.10, and the problem only started after I upgraded one of my
laptops to 14.04.

The different boot parameters did not have an effect. It looks all pretty much
the same and the HDD did not have been auto mounted at any time.
I used this mainline kernel for the tests:
/~kernel-ppa/ma
I've tried with the kernel you supposed.
The problem persists, the external hdd is not auto-mounted.

I have a problem with my external SATA HDD (built into a USB3.0 case), which is
connected to USB3.0 port.
The HDD is not auto mounted in Ubuntu 11.04, as I woul have expected. The HDD
is not even recognized as a device (e.g. /dev/sdc1), for instance in gparted.

- using the context menu entry "Safely Remove Drive" fails from both Nautilus
AND Desktop, but works from Unity Sidebar.

system reboots after doing this:

It allows you to disable XDamage, which makes VNC as slow as molasses,
but it works.
