After following the instructions found on this page:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=916027 the problem no longer
persists. It appeared that the problem was in the drivers and not in
network manager. Someone please close this thread.

second problem has been solved. But the original problem still persists.

Update: Apparently I am unable to connect to the network automatically,
in other words, clicking on the name of the network in the network-
manager applet dropdown menu, but when I create the network manually I
am then able to connect to it correctly. When I was creating the network

After updating the distro a couple more times the problem seems to have
been fixed. I am now able to connect to eduroam with no problems, I'm
using it as we speak. Thank you! ^^
