Me too I did "rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-*" (after saving those files), and
restarted p-d.
Then recreate your desktop, with help of the original plasma-desktop-appletrc
to remember the elements on your previous desktop.
Noticed that multiple-windows dont work that well anymore and the
window-
After removing all packages containing the word *flightgear*, the
upgrade from 12.04.3 to 14.04 worked well, in 1 go.

crashing by itself, not by any bad circumstances, causing the plasma-desktop

Same comment as Anton32828: sound works on anything, except Totem.
No problem with Firefox, Konqueror and Chrome plugins, Rythmbox, Amarok, VLC,
etc. They all play error-free sound, good quality, no jitter, noise, or
anything.
Only Totem fails to produce sound. Totem Video image is okay.

Had similar problems on 32-bit version of Karmic.
As advised in several places, get rid of Pulse-audio (sadly) en switch (back)
