This was a codec problem. I don't usually use totem so when I went to
check the properties there I had to install the codecs first. After that
the properties show up in Nautilus.

I installed gnome-panel-dbg and ran the backtrace, find it attached.
I noticed that it said no debugging symbols found when I started gdb though.
Let me know if I need to install something else and run again.
When I finished the backtrace and quit the process I noticed that nautilus was
comsumin
The lower panel with the application tabs and the virtual desktop selector also
becomes unresponsive, taking several seconds at least to change to a different
application/virtual desktop when clicked.
I can change immediately with alt-tab however.

When I click the download listings button it runs for a short period and then
