BIOS on the laptop was updated to version F.50 (the latest).
The behaviour is worst as with previous BIOS: the disk fails to connect
even on the first attempt after booting.

Latest 3.17 kernel was installed on Utopic to test this problem.
Behaviour is the same.
External HD is recognised only first one or two times after booting the
system.
Similar errors as with previous kernels are reported in dmesg then. I
noticed that they slightly differ if the disk is connected

I am in contact with Alan Stern. He provided me a patch for newer Linux
kernel (I am using 2.6.38).
The patch looks promising. Disconnect didn't happen with patched kernel
during the 1 month test period.

Good news:
Patched Linux kernel from Natty (2.6.38) is being used on several
computers (COMe) for almost two weeks. USB occasionally disconnected
using stock kernel.
USB disk where the complete OS is installed did not unexpectedly
disconnect on any of these embedded devices.

I ran compiz-check script on 11.04 and it reports that the laptop is
using vesa driver instead of radeon. Strange.

I tried to boot with linux-image-2.6.37-12-virtual. Virtual machine
doesn't boot with this kernel as well and falls in busybox.
It seems that initrd doesn't contain the drivers for (S)ATA disks.

Scott, I can confirm that setting EXAPixmaps to off helps.
I my case, not only the speed but also correctness of the display is
