This isn't a fix by any stretch of the word but it is a viable
workaround.
Apparently Fujitsu-Siemens had enough complaints about this and added an option
in the BIOS to choose whether the laptop will have the WiFi On or Off by
default or, whether it will remember the last state it was in.

I found this bug report while researching on how to enable wireless for
a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Sa3560-L I'm thinking of purchasing (actually
I'm now sending this from one such test machine).
I tried Kubuntu 9.04 LiveCD and while there was both an output and the
expected function for Fn+F3 (mute),
I have not had a chance to download Kubuntu 8.10 and since 9.04 will be
officially using KDE 4 I doubt the same would apply.
However in at least 7.04 and 7.10 the same problem would apply and in the exact
same manner.

The default Kubuntu settings have it set this way.
However if you go and try to mess with the regional settings it's
disrupted and after that, KDE doesn't allow for that key combination...
Basically my question was how to return it to the default behavior.

Heh, that's what I've been doing all this time, however it ain't
comfortable, I am much too accustomed to the Alt+Shift combo and
actually requires me to make conscious though to type the correct combo
(after the one I use mechanically fails...)

Oh yeah, forgot to tell that even though the updater crashed the system
remained stable, I rebooted manually and at the very least it seemed to work.
After the reboot I saw a new boot screen and a couple of differences. Not sure
whether everything was updated as needed.
