OK, after no help in finding how to install the suggested program, and a
lot of fruitless searching I finally stumbled acros :

To install do the following :
sudo
FYI I had another go at compiling the Realtek driver.
After a couple of reboots I tried this in alsa-base.conf :
options snd-hda-intel model=inv-dmic
I now have sound via the internal speakers but not the headphones. Pulse
still shows "speakers unavailable" even though it is playing through
them
Note I also tried varying different lines in alsa.base.conf
