OK, after no help in finding how to install the suggested program, and a lot of fruitless searching I finally stumbled acros :
https://launchpad.net/~diwic/+archive/ubuntu/ppa More specifically you need this : https://launchpad.net/~diwic/+archive/ubuntu/hda To install do the following : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diwic/hda sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install snd-hda-tools Once I ran it I got the following, if it makes any sense : sudo hdajacksensetest Pin 0x15 (Black Headphone, Rear side): present = Yes Pin 0x18 (Black Mic, Rear side): present = Yes Ironically the laptop has a pair of sockets at the front for headphones but no actual ´rear´ ones. It seems that whether the headphones are plugged in or not the system believes that they are, and that the internal speakers are therefore ´disconnected´ WIll happily diagnose/test further if someone tells me what to do. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1408856 Title: [HP Pavilion dv6700 Notebook PC, Realtek ALC268, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1408856/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
