Firefox crashed for me in the same function.

I have since tried using a Gutsy final live CD to see if it locked up the
laptop hard a few seconds after X starts like the installed copy and it hadn't,
so I backed up the contents and installed a fresh copy of Gutsy (prior install
was an upgrade from Feisty).
I can now confirm this bug occurs

I'd also like to just add a little more fuel:
If I, for example, attempt to visit a site in Firefox, it will sit
unsuccessfully attempting to push packets out. However, if I switch to a vc and
return to X the site will have loaded (consistently reproducible).
