I switched to using the generic kernel. If you're hardware is so old 340
is the latest graphics driver you can use, you probably don't need
Focal's HWE. The generic kernel is supported until 2025. I expect I'll
replace this device by then either due to getting sick of the driver's
poor performance

I'm having the same issue. Both host and guest are 20.04 and Virtualbox
6.1.10 packages from Ubuntu repo. I'm not able to change the guest's
resolution *at all,* which makes it unusable for anything with a GUI
because nothing written in the last 10 years gracefully downgrades to

I didn't have this problem until upgrading 20.04, though I also upgraded
the video card from HD5000 to R7 when I did. Try setting "Hardware-
accelerated decoding" to something other than Automatic or VDPAU.

This issue only happens with some of my video files and the issue seems
to be with VLC's "Hardware-acclerated decoding" setting. When that is
set to either Automatic or VDPAU, those files always cause VLC to need
to be killed. When set to Disabled or either of the VAAPI, VLC behaves
correctly.
