Public bug reported:

KDE's system tray shows Virtualbox is always using the microphone, even
when no gust is configured to use it. When all the guests are stopped,
there is no notification about the microphone. The serious problem is
that when Virtualbox is using the microphone, it screws up all audio
playback in the guests and the host. All sound has a static-like hissing
mixed into. It happens whether sound playback in the guest (also Ubuntu
20.04) or the host, when playing back web streams, or playing back local
files in a variety of media players such as Clementine or VLC. The
problem happens when the guest's audio controller is set to ICH AC97 and
Intel ICH 9. Disabling audio input on the guest makes no difference
either. The only thing close to a work around I've found is to
completely disable audio on all guests. Due to the nature of some of my
VMs, that is very undesirable.
